Checks indicated that the gunmen stormed the community, shot sporadically in the air to scare away those who might want to rescue their victim, the immediate past chairman of the Community Development Committee.

“They came in a speedboat, bundled him and ferried him away through the waterways. They must have taken him to the creeks,” a source in the community said.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Hilary Opara, who confirmed the incident, assured Bayelsans that the police were on the trail of the hoodlums.

“We have got information on the incident. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area and the Assistant Commissioner of Police have briefed me and the good thing is that we have known the direction of the hoodlums; so, we shall round them up,” he said.

Opara said the command immediately deployed its anti-kidnap squad to identify the whereabouts of the kidnappers and rescue the victim.

On the kidnap of Senator Paulker’s mother, Opara said the police were working hard to ensure she rejoined her family soon.

He said: “We have made some progress on that incident. We arrested one of them within hours and the next day we arrested three more suspects who are helping us and we are still making more arrests.

“It is a syndicate from what we have found out and we have cut off the communication link between the suspects in our custody and those holding the woman. So, we are hoping that soon we shall free her.”
