Azikiwe International Airport News – The Senate Committee Chairman on Aviation, Senator Hope Uzodinma has said that the runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja has to be closed down for safety reasons.
Senator Uzodinma who spoke to State House correspondents on Friday, said there were potholes on the runway, which had to be fixed.
While responding to alternative landing runways, Senator Uzondinma said: “All over the world they know that we have one runway in Abuja. The next thing anybody can do is to look for the nearest airport close to Abuja, either Kaduna or Minna.
Earlier, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria had announced that the airport would be closed for three days beginning from 11pm on Saturday July 5 to 5am Monday July 7th.
According to the Coordinating General Manager, Aviation Parastatals, Mr Yakubu Dati, the closure will enable the authority to carry out maintenance on the facility.
He said the maintenance which would further enhance safety and security at the airport is in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation requirements and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority approved Safety Standard and Recommended Practices.
