Bank can simply mean a place where people go to save money and receive loans. There are usually licensed by the government and might offer other services such as financial advising and currency exchange services.

There are many banks with different functions. Some banks serve specific people, some are meant for the general public, while some are known to only regulate the activities of other banks.

This articles will be discussing the different banks in Nigeria and give the full list of the type of bank that operates for the public.

Types of Banks in Nigeria

These are the major types of banks in Nigeria

  1. Savings Bank: These are banks that allow customers to save their money. The majority of banks in Nigeria operates as a savings bank.
  2. Commercial Bank: These are the common types of banks which offer their services for businesses. In Nigeria, all commercial banks operate as a savings bank. However, not all savings bank are the commercial bank. Helping businesses is their main target and it also offers loan to businesses. An example is GTB, Zenith Bank etc.
  3. Central Bank: Central or National bank is a federal government-owned type of bank. It is usually one in the whole federation with branches across the regions or states. It doesn’t operate with the public but serves as the regulating bank for all other licensed banks in the country. The central bank is the only bank with the right to produce the country’s currency and also performs other financial functions for the country. Example: Central Bank of Nigeria
  4. Exchange Bank: These are banks licensed to remit money from one country to another. They are also responsible for exchanging other country’s currency for another. Most Nigeria banks are licensed to perform the services of an exchange bank.
