The Authority of the Head of State and Government of ECOWAS has adopted the new Biometric identity cards to replace the ECOWAS Identity card and Resident Permit.
To this end, the Authority has instructed the ECOWAS Commission to expedite measure for effective circulation of the new Biometric Identity Card.
Briefing Newsmen at the end of the 46th Ordinary Session of the Authority of the Heads of State and Governments, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Kadre Ouadraogo, said that the card, which would come into effect in 2016, is to enhance economic integration.
The Authority also adopted in principle, the Supplementary Act on the Enhancement of Powers of the ECOWAS Parliament.
According to Mr. Ouadraogo, the financial implication of enforcing the act was to be reviewed.
Radio Nigeria correspondent reports that the summit deferred the election of the new Chairman of the Authority of the Heads of State and Government to May 2015, when ECOWAS will mark its 40th Anniversary in Abuja.
