In February 1988, the Federal Government created the Federal Road Safety Commission through Decree No. 45 of the 1988 as amended by Decree 35 of 1992 referred to in the statute books as the FRSC Act cap 141 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN). Passed by the National Assembly as Federal Road Safety Commission (establishment) Act 2007. The functions of the Commission generally relates to:

-Making the highway safe for motorists and other road users.

-Recommending works and devices designed to eliminate or minimize accidents on the highways and advising the Federal and State Governments including the Federal Capital Territory Administration and relevant governmental agencies on the localities where such works and devices are required, and

-Educating motorists and members of the public on the importance of discipline on the highway.

The Nigerian Prisons Service derives its operational powers from CAP 366 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990 to

-take into lawful custody all those certified to be so kept by courts of competent jurisdiction;

-produce suspects in courts as and when due;

-identify the causes of their anti-social dispositions;

-set in motion mechanisms for their treatment and training for eventual reintegration into society as normal law abiding citizens on discharge; and

-administer Prisons Farms and Industries for this purpose and in the process generate revenue for the government.

The Prisons Service in Nigeria is a Federal phenomenon.  That is to say that the Prison is exclusively a Federal Government concern which means that no State for now has the power in Law to operate or maintain prisons.

The Federal Fire Service is  the nation’s largest fire and rescue service, working 24 hours a day to keep the it safe from fires and responding to emergencies. The current structure of the Fire Service in Nigeria is based upon the legislation of the Fire Services Act of 1981.(Link to the Act)

The Fire Services in Nigeria are managed at local authority level, with the Department of the Environment and Local Government playing an advisory, legislative and policy-making role. The Fire Services are operated by 37 Fire Authorities , which are managed by State Councils, and Town Councils around the states.

They help to reduce the outbreak of fire and related emergencies to a minimum level through Training, Policy and regulation, Public Enlightenment, Research and Capacity Building. Also ensuring the safety of lives, property and environment through adequate preparedness.
