The #5 has the portrait of Alhaji Tafawa Balewa. Tafawa Balewa was Nigeria’s first and only Prime Minister from 1960-1966. He was born in 1912 and was killed in 1966 during the first ever military coup in Nigeria.

Alvan Ikoku is the man on the #10 note. Ikoku was born in 1900 and he died in 1971. During his lifetime, Alvan was an Educator, statesman, activist and politician. His contribution earned him the honour of being on the #10 currency.

  • #20

The #20 note has the portrait of Murtala Mohammed. Murtala Mohammed was Nigeria’s Head of State between 1975 and 1976 when he was killed in a coup. He lived between 1938 -1976. On the reverse side is Ladi kwali. Ladi was a Nigerian potter. She earned national recognition through her expertise in pottery. She was born in 1925 and died in 1984.

The #50 currency has images drawn on the both sides. On the front side are four people: a woman and 3 men. Supposedly, they were drawn from the various religions/ethnicities of Nigeria. On the back side is a big catch by fishermen.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s image is embedded on the #100 naira note. Awolowo, was born in 1909. He died in 1987. An astute politician, Awolowo was the Premier of the Western Region between 1954–1960.

  • #200

Sir Ahmadu Bello is honoured with the appearance on the #200 currency. Ahmadu Bello was the Sarduana of Sokoto and first Premier of the Northern region from 1954-1966. He was one of those killed in the first military coup in Nigeria.

  • #500

Zik of Africa – Nnamdi Azikiwe, appears on the #500 note. He was born on 1904 and died in 1996. As an astute politician, he served in various capacities through which his contributions gave him a legend status in Nigeria. Zik was the first Nigeria president as well as the first senate president in Nigeria.

  • #1,000

Two men appear on the #1,000 note: Aliyu Mai-Bornu and Clement Isong.  Aliyu Mai-Borno was born in the year 1919. He died on 1970. During his time, he was the Governor of the Central bank Of Nigeria from 1963 – 1967. He was however succeeded by Dr. Clement Isong. Dr Isong served from the 1967 to 1975. He was born in 1920 and died in the year 2000.
