President Goodluck Jonathan has called on labour leaders to work harmoniously with government in the interest of workers.
President Jonathan made the call at the inauguration of the pilot phase of the Federal Government’s Nationwide Workers’ Housing Scheme at Apo Tafiya in Abuja.
He said that workers suffer most during industrial crisis and urged labour union leaders to exploit all peaceful avenues of dispute resolution before embarking on strike or industrial action.
According to the President, the Apo Tafiya pilot phase of the housing project is expected to deliver about 1,205 housing units to workers resident in the FCT.
The Minister of Housing, Mrs Akon Ekakenyi, said that govt had to work out modalities for addressing the housing deficit in the country.
President of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade BoboyiKaigama said that Nigerian workers were happy that the president was keeping his promise to make them house owners.
Comrade Kaigama commended the president for directing the FCT Minister to allocate the land for the project.
The scheme is designed to provide 10,000 mixed income housing units to workers nationwide.
It is being implemented by the Federal Government in collaboration with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and some real estate developers.
